We've all lost someone immeasurably irreplaceable, but we'll always remember what an amazingly talented entertainer (in the largest possible sense of the word) Steve Allen was, and how devoted to his family he seemed to be.

Love your "Meeting of the Minds" series ... please consider revitalizing this ! Also, what is your position on Elsis' and his efforts ? My assumption is that you concur but it's not clear that you have officially sanctioned his cause.

----Saw this paragraph in an article on Moore's Law------Wondered what you might make of it-----I have an idea but I'd like to hear yours------- After World War II, the United States spent decades with productivity growing at an average rate of almost 3 percent a year-enough, roughly speaking, to double living standards every generation. In 1973, however, productivity growth suddenly slowed to 1.1 percent, far below its previous level. Nobody knows why. “The post-1973 productivity slowdown,” says Jack Triplett of the Brookings Institute, “is a puzzle that has so far resisted all attempts at solution.” The effects of the slowdown, alas, are well-known. At that slower rate, living standards double in three generations, not one. The result was stagnation. Wage-earners still won raises, but employers, unable to absorb the extra costs with higher productivity, simply passed the increase into higher prices, which canceled the benefit of higher wages. Unsurprisingly, economists say, the unproductive 1970s and 1980s were years of inflation, recession, unemployment, social conflict and enormous budget deficits. In 1995, productivity changed direction again. Without any fanfare, it abruptly began rising at an annual average clip of almost 2.2 percent-a great improvement from the 1980s, though still less than the 1960s.

Hello Steve,

I have a question and two comments for you.

1st, What is a Freem?

Your jazz recordings are top flight, but you are not as good as the great Buck Hammer!

About 35 plus years ago, Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors Ice Cream Store had a Green IceCream called "Steveareno". I am not sure how long the flavor lasted but I am glad the man that inspired it, is still going strong into the year 2000.

If you can, answer What is a Freem?

Thank You Steve, robbonline1@juno.com Joseph "Robb" Roberts 402 Uluniu St. Apt.1 Kailua, Hawaii 96734 808-261-2198

Dear Steve, If this gets to you I'm amazed! I'll get right to the point. Back in about 1962 I turned on the Tonight Show (Paar) and you were on as a guest. After some chat, you introduced The New Gravy Waltz, which I loved, and as an encore you introduced a little "ditty" you had written for personal reasons. We didn't have VCRs and I didn't have a pencil handy, but I fell in love with that little song, and after almost 40 years, the parts I can remember still get in my head and won't leave: "Good morning my dear, I love you today. I've said it before, I know, a time or so, but I love you today." I thought I'd never hear it again, but recently while listening to you play it in my head once more, I suddenly had the idea that maybe through the internet I could track down an answer. Was this song ever published? Where can I find it? It would mean a great deal to me after all these years, like a lovely final cadence, to be able to sing it to myself from beginning to end. Thanks for listening. -- jc cook JC_Cook@USWEST.net -or- jc.cook@UAL.com

Dear Mr. Allen,

We are a couple of hack DJ's that play Top Forty Hits from Big Band to current.

You recorded "Autum Leaves" back in 1955 and it was charted at #35.

We can't find it anywhere. We're not even sure what Album of yours it was on as no one lists it as being recorded, except for Billboard, and they only report the single. Will it ever be re-released, or could you give us a hint as to how we could expand our search for it?

Thank you,

Growing up I could always count on you for a big smile(smock-smock) on T.V. Your shows were very entertaining and you really seemed to enjoy the work you did. I am now 46 and it is better late than never so "Thank You Very Much, Mr. Allen!" -karmic@aol.com(Mike)
